Youth Governance Day is a signature civic engagement initiative launched by Virtutem Populo in 2024 to bring students closer to the heart of local government. Held annually at the beginning of summer break, this program gives high school students the opportunity to serve as “Mayor for a Day” across more than 19 municipalities in Miami-Dade County.

This immersive experience places students directly into the spaces where decisions are made—pairing them with real mayors, commissioners, and city staff. Participants shadow officials through meetings, site visits, and day-to-day operations, gaining an authentic understanding of how local government works.

Far beyond a ceremonial title, Youth Governance Day gives students access, voice, and a genuine taste of leadership. It inspires civic awareness, encourages policy-minded thinking, and strengthens the connection between youth and their communities. Many students walk away feeling empowered, informed, and ready to engage in public service or advocacy.

Whether it’s sitting at the mayor’s desk, joining a city planning session, or learning how municipal budgets are made, Youth Governance Day turns government into a tangible, personal experience for the next generation of leaders.
